What is a root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment involves the removal of the pulp tissues (nerve) from the tooth when it gets infected or inflamed. It helps to save a badly damaged tooth instead of removing it. Once the nerve is removed the remaining canal space is cleaned, shaped and filled.

» Severe spontaneous pain in a tooth
» Sharp shooing pain waking you up at night
» Pain radiating to the jaws and giving headaches
» Sensitivity to cold or hot
» Deep cavity involving the nerve
» Pain on biting and chewing
» Swollen gum over the infected tooth
» Pus drainage giving a salty taste in the mouth

» Fever and general ill-feeling
» Discolouration of the tooth
» History of trauma, injury or fracture

Is a root canal treatment painful?

The procedure is relatively comfortable and often painless since the tooth is anaesthetised during treatment. After the treatment, the tooth may be sensitive or tender for a few days due to inflammation of the surrounding tissues. Follow the dentist’s prescription for pain and infection control. What should I do after the treatment?

Avoid chewing or biting on the tooth being treated until you have it permanently restored with it either a filling or a crown. Excessive pressure at this stage may crack or fracture the tooth.
