A complete denture is a removable appliance that replaces all the missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. Losing teeth makes eating & speech difficult and the facial muscles to sag, making one look older. Dentures can help lift up the appearance of your face and profile in addition to provide function of chewing food. Complete dentures can be either "conventional" or "immediate”.

Conventional Dentures
They are ready for placement in the mouth about 8-12 weeks after the teeth have been removed and gums healed.

Immediate Dentures
Unlike conventional dentures, these on the other hand are made in advance and can be placed as soon as the teeth are removed. As a result, the patient does not have to be without teeth during the healing period. However with time, the bones and gums resorb. Therefore a disadvantage of immediate dentures compared to conventional dentures is that they require more adjustments to fit properly during the healing process months. These dentures are a temporary solution until conventional dentures can be made.

Are there any alternative to removable dentures?
Yes, nowadays dental implants and bridges are the preferred method for replacing a few or all the missing teeth. They more closely resemble the feel of real teeth but the cost is usually greater. Consult us if you’re looking for fixed teeth replacement treatments in New Delhi.

Adjusting to a new complete denture
» New dentures may feel awkward for a few weeks until you become accustomed to them.
» Initially, the dentures may feel loose when the muscles of the cheek and tongue are adapting to keep them in place. You may experience minor irritation or soreness and increased saliva flow. As your mouth becomes accustomed to the dentures, these problems subside.
» Follow-up appointments are needed after a denture is inserted so the fit can be checked and adjusted.
» After initial adjustment, eating should become a more pleasant experience with dentures. Start out by eating soft foods that are cut into small pieces and chew on both sides of the mouth to apply even pressure. Avoid foods that are extremely sticky or hard for the first few weeks.
» Over time, denture adjustments are necessary. As you age, your mouth naturally changes which can affect the fit of the denture. The bones and the gum ridges recede or shrink, resulting in a poorly fit denture.
